Great Places – The Handbook for Planning and Design of Successful Public Spaces

Public space plays a key role in people's daily lives and the attractiveness of cities. A good public space is essential to well-being, health, and an attractive living and working environment. Because information regarding the relationship between the design, layout, and actual use of public space appeared to be fragmented, Rosemarie Maas and Kyra Kuitert, consultants at Bureau KM', wrote "Great Places – The Handbook for Planning and Design of Successful Public Spaces".

  • Seven themes per scale: attractive, safe, healthy, inclusive, child-friendly, green & biodiverse, and climate adaptive.

  • Over 500 design guidelines: developed for six different scales, including close to home, neighborhood, city, squares, parks, and routes.

  • Concrete and practical: applicable for programs of requirements, design, redevelopment, professional discussion, and more.

  • Engaging insights: includes interesting facts, quotes, and many previously unpublished guidelines.

  • Visual inspiration: features photographs of public spaces from over 100 cities worldwide.

All guidelines were established after extensive testing by a broad expert group.
